Two Nights in the Sandhills: A Dismal River Itinerary

You’ve been on a golf trip before, but you’ve never done two nights in the Sandhills at Dismal River. You’ve been on the trips where you’re lost trying to book accommodations, secure tee times, get everyone to agree on where to eat, and annoyed that there’s nowhere to regroup other than a crammed hotel room.

A less than ideal golf trip experience.

What you need is a trip where everything is on site. And not only that, one where you have options so every day is different. You want something new every day.

We planned out the perfect 2-night, 3-day Dismal River itinerary where you can experience the land, learn the courses, and bond with the group you came with.

Day One: Arrive, Get Your Bearings

Don’t be fooled into thinking your trip starts when you arrive on property. The beauty of Dismal River is its location deep in the Sandhills — the quiet, serene setting. The drive into Dismal River Club is part of the reset.

Check in, drop off your bags, and head to the White Course for your first tee time of the trip. Learn the course, and don’t be too hard on yourself. The ever-changing winds will be challenging, but they make no two rounds the same.

The logical next move is a UTV sunset tour, a great activity for your first day at Dismal River. It gives you a sense of the scale of the property and helps you get your bearings. Rolling hills, the river cutting through the land, wide open sky.

End your day with dinner at the Clubhouse. The kitchen focuses on regional ingredients and seasonal menus, and after a long day of travel and golf, you’ll appreciate the fresh meal. You’re on an adrenaline kick. If it’s not yet time to rest, it sounds like the perfect night for whiskey and cigars in the lounge, the fire pit, and a game of billiards.

Day Two: The Full Day

An early morning round on the Red Course. The routing asks questions that target golf doesn’t. The wind changes the club selection, the ground game is part of the strategy, and the land itself is part of the design. It rewards patience.

After your round, meet up at the clubhouse for lunch or head out to Jack’s Shack for a quick, but tasty, bite before your next round. You need some quiet to reflect on the round you just had.

Then it’s time for your rematch on the White Course. Remember, that 7-iron you pulled out on the 9th hole might not work today. The winds have shifted. Take your time, reassess, and remember what you learned from your first round.

What a day. Dinner at Buffalo Bill’s Pub, followed by a drink by the fire. Then it’s off to your cabin where it’s time to hear the quiet and reflect on the day you just spent with friends and the Sandhills.

Day Three: One More Round

Head to breakfast before you pack up, then pull out your lucky polo. The Red Course is ready for you. By now, you’ve learned how to play to the conditions and the natural contours of the Sandhills. You’re about to close out this trip with your best round yet.
