Celebrating 20 Years in the Sandhills

There is something entirely spiritual about driving into the Nebraska Sandhills. The paved roads give way to narrow, single-lane tracks, the cell service drops to a whisper, and the horizon stretches out in massive, ancient dunes that feel more like ocean waves frozen in time than America’s heartland.

This August marks exactly 20 years since Dismal River Club first brought championship golf to this wild, wind-swept corner of Mullen, Nebraska.

To celebrate this milestone, let’s take a look back at the moments, the milestones, and the master shaping that defined our first 20 years.

Two Decades in the Dunes

A VISION IN THE SAND
Early 2000s

A tight-knit group of friends from Denver fall in love with the remote solitude of the Sandhills. Inspired by the pure-golf ethos sweeping the region, they envision an uncompromising destination that balances world-class architecture with the unvarnished character of the Old West.

THE WHITE COURSE OPENS
2006

Designed by the Golden Bear himself, Jack Nicklaus, the White Course makes its massive debut. Spanning over 7,300 yards from the back tees, the layout embraces wild elevation shifts and dramatic, blind shots that challenge even the most seasoned players.

TOM DOAK’S RED COURSE ARRIVES
2013

Renowned minimalist architect Tom Doak and his Renaissance Golf Design crew unveil the Red Course. Utilizing an “open-jaw” routing that drops nearly 200 feet down to a dramatic finish along the riverbank, it earns immediate, widespread national acclaim for its organic, free-flowing holes.

BEYOND THE FAIRWAYS
2017-2023

Dismal River expands its horizon to become a true multi-day playground, building up to 80 rooms and introducing 17 guided hunting, shooting, and fishing experiences alongside kayaking and mountain biking.

THE NEXT ERA
2023 – PRESENT

The club steps firmly into its future. The addition of luxury four-bedroom cabins brings 20 more rooms to the property, refining the hospitality while preserving the off-the-grid magic that makes the journey worth it.

What Makes This Place Memorable

If you talk to anyone who has spent a weekend out here, they’ll tell you it’s not just about the numbers on the scorecard. It’s about the silence out on the 6th tee of the Red Course, looking over a sea of prairie grass. It’s the unique challenge of playing a Nicklaus design built over pure sand, or putting on natural, undulated greens that Doak’s team shaped in under an hour because the land was already perfect.

Dismal River has grown up, but it hasn’t lost its edge. It remains a places where five-star comfort meets genuine, unpretentious Wild West personality. Whether you are out here for the double-targets at the shooting range, a crisp morning tracking game, or 36 holes of the finest dirt-and-grass theatre in the world, you are part of a 20-year legacy.

Here’s to the footprints we’ve left behind, the photographs we’ve saved, and the next 20 years out in the dunes.
