Your Dismal River trip begins the second you leave home.
You might be driving west through rolling farmland, flying into a regional airport before finishing the journey through the Nebraska Sandhills, or turning the trip into a road trip with your buddies. This is where the excitement kicks off, no matter how you get here.
You’re traveling with your favorite people, the shared Spotify playlist is already on, and someone keeps bringing up the bet that was made in the group chat three weeks ago.
The further you go, the quieter it gets. Traffic disappears, towns get smaller and the sky gets bigger. Somewhere along the way, the outside world starts to fall off behind you.
Where Is Dismal River?
Dismal River Club is tucked deep into the Nebraska Sandhills near the town of Mullen, Nebraska — one of the most remote and beautiful golf landscapes in the country.
That remoteness is exactly what makes it special.
You’re not showing up to a resort surrounded by subdivisions, traffic, and…people. You’re heading into wide-open country where golf, nature, and time with your group become the only things that matter.
Getting to Dismal River
Major Commercial Airports
Denver International Airport (DEN) — Approx. 5 hour drive Denver is the most common major airport for Dismal River trips. It offers the easiest flight options from most major U.S. cities and turns the trip into an unforgettable drive through eastern Colorado and into the Nebraska Sandhills. This route gives you the full “golf trip starts now” experience.
Omaha Eppley Airfield (OMA) — Approx. 5.5 hour drive Coming from the Midwest? Omaha is another solid option. The drive takes you through classic Nebraska small towns before opening into the Sandhills landscape.
Regional Commercial Airports
If you want to maximize your time in the air and minimize your time on the highway, you can fly into a closer regional hub. Multiple major cities offer connecting flights right into the heart of Nebraska:
Central Nebraska Regional, Grand Island (GRI) — Approx. 3.5 hour drive Perfect for groups flying out of the South or West, with direct incoming flights from Dallas/Ft. Worth, Phoenix, and Las Vegas.
North Platte Regional Airport (LBF) — Approx. 1.5 hour drive The closest commercial option, sitting about 70 miles south of Mullen — roughly an hour and a half on Hwy 97. Denver flies directly into North Platte, giving you one of the shortest ground transfers of any Sandhills destination.
Kearney Regional (EAR) — Approx. 3 hour drive A great middle-ground option with direct incoming flights from both Denver and Chicago.
Flying Private
If your group is arriving via private aviation, you can land even closer to the first tee. You have three excellent options depending on your aircraft:
Dismal River Grass Airstrip (82NE): Built for aircraft up to a turbo prop. It features a private grass airstrip located just a short, 15-minute shuttle drive to the club.
Thedford (TIF): Accommodates aircraft up to a small jet, leaving you with an easy 50-minute shuttle drive to the resort. > Note: Shuttles for both the Dismal River airstrip and Thedford must be pre-booked directly with DRC.
Trego-Dugan FBO in North Platte (LBF): Perfect for large jets. Rental cars are available right at the airport through Hertz or Thrifty for the remaining 1.5-hour drive.
Driving to Dismal River From Major Cities
From Denver
Approx. 4.5–5 hours
This is the classic Dismal River road trip.
Load up the SUV. Stop for coffee and breakfast before leaving the city. As you head northeast, the landscape slowly changes from busy highways to open prairie and endless sky.
By the final hour, you’ll understand why people make this their yearly tradition.
Recommended Stops Along the Way
- Ogallala, NE — good lunch stop and fuel-up point
- Lake McConaughy — worth a quick detour for the views
- The Petrified Wood Gallery in Ogallala — pure roadside Americana
From Omaha
Approx. 5–5.5 hours
The Omaha route feels like a gradual transition from city life into ranch country. You’ll pass through small Nebraska towns, long stretches of highway, and eventually into the rolling dunes of the Sandhills.
This drive feels quieter. Slower.
And that’s exactly what makes it memorable.
Recommended Stops Along the Way
- Kearney, NE — ideal midway stop for food or coffee
- Broken Bow, NE — classic Sandhills town with local bars and diners
- Valentine, NE (if extending the trip) — one of Nebraska’s great outdoor towns
From Kansas City
Approx. 7 hours
For Midwest golf groups, Kansas City makes for an elite golf road trip launch point. Plenty of groups split the drive with a lunch stop and spend the final hours talking matches, making bets, and who forgot to pack their golf shoes.
The Best Way to Experience Dismal River
Drive it.
Even if you’re flying into Denver or Omaha, don’t think of the drive as the inconvenient part. It’s part of the experience. Some of the best conversations of the trip happen in the car before you ever arrive. The inside jokes that last years to come, picking the song of the trip, and those pre-trip jitters to keep the vibes up.
Then eventually, you crest into the Sandhills and realize there’s golf out here that feels completely disconnected from the rest of the world.
That’s when the trip really starts.
